We found this awesome candy shop last year, November 9th 2022 during our family trip. We were able to sample lots of items, my kids fell in love with the cute little shop and Mr. Bains was just the sweetest. Such a wonderful memory ! We purchased a big bag of sour ball candies and other miscellaneous items, which were all wonderful! We will be ordering some candies this year to share for Christmas with friends !! Thank you !

There are so many items in this shop that I have tried - love them all. The story of the Macaroon is heartwarming...orange is my absolute favourite. I feel like a fan following these guys around local fun days where they have stalls and pop ups at work.... amazing products and amazing staff - slowly making my way around all items - not that I need am excuse to come back time and time again!

My wife was first to into your shop and a couple of minutes later she excitedly came running out saying " Scott .... you have to taste this fudge ..... it's like what your dad made " She was right .... John offered me a sample of the Tablet and as I tasted it I couldn't help but to close my eyes and memories and tastes from 65 years ago filled my mind. My Dad used to make this fudge and was always a special treat. Us kiddies would all grab a spoon and scrape the pot of what remained after Dad poured the fudge onto a plate. This past May we had the good fortune to visit this delightful and charming Sweet Shop! It is colorful and cozy and offers every kind of candy and sweet you can imagine or remember from the past! John Bains shared a sample of his homemade tablet with me .... the delicious buttery, sugary treat I had fallen in love with 20 years ago on our first trip to Scotland! Traditional, tasty sweets -- not the mass-produced stuff -- at amazingly reasonable prices. This shop was exactly what I was looking for. I was on the hunt for that genuine tablet taste and texture that you do not get in the boxed ‘gifts’. On entering the shop I smiled, I could smell I was in the right place! John was so warm and friendly and gave me and my sister a taste of his homemade tablet. It immediately took me back to my childhood and my memories of my Grandma. This is the closest I have ever tasted to Grandmas tablet. I was in Scotland to lay my Grandma to rest after many years of her not being able to bake anymore. Now I am lucky enough to have the recipe that John kindly emailed me and I hope that I can recreate those precious memories and tastes for my children. What a fantastic experience dealing with Bains Retro Sweets. I called John on the off chance he could help me with a delivery to my niece who with her mam and dad had just flown in from the Middle East and who would be quarantining at an airport hotel for the next ten days. John suggested a large mixed jar of every kind of retro sweet you can imagine and I added in another smaller jar too. I just wanted to offer a general review of the shop and the sweets. Aside from the Amazing selection, you will not find a more gracious, caring and honest owner than John Bains!! I am a world class sweet eater who first visited the shop on or initially visit to Edinburg in May 2019 and was absolutely delighted to find Bains Retro Sweets only a stones through from our Airbnb. I visited the shop on our first day, and then twice or three times a day every day thereafter for the following 5 days. It’s a small shop relative to most other types of shops, but as far as Sweet Shops go it’s huge and so well stocked you could loose your mind. Aside from the selection and the quality, the best part about the shop is its friendly and knowledgeable owner, John Bains. He truly goes out of his way to accommodate customers.And the prices are very fair and reasonable. I’ve hunted out sweet shops all across Europe, the UK and the States and this one is by far my favorite. I might even retire in Edinburg lol. So, honestly, from someone who takes his sweets extremely seriously, don’t walk to this shop, run, and plan to stay a good 30 minutes or so checking out all of your favorites and discovering many more that you ever even heard of! For me, the best discovery was the creamy vanilla fudge bars. I would have bet my house that they weren’t going to stack up to my previous favorites, but if I did I would have lost that bet! In fact, I loved them so much that I was consuming 3 of them a day while in Edinburg, and I brought a dozen bars home with me. Once they ran out a month or so later, I reached out to John who gave me his personal cell phone and arranged for 10 kilos to be shipped directly to. E in NJ, USA.,John arranged the whole thing and a few days later my fudge arrived! But that’s not the crazy part! The crazy part is that over year and a half later, his fudge has not hardened and is still soft and fresh. Absolutely amazing! Even for someone who imports about 100:kilos a year of UK and European sweets, I’m still baffled by this. An absolutely amazing shop. Smells take you right back to childhood and sweets long gone. The shop owner is amazingly knowledgeable and very passionate about his shop and the sweets he sells. There is nothing quite like a Santa at Christmas who goes out of their way to do a good deed. Phoned the shop to ask about sugar mice only to find they did have them but they were now closed over Christmas for a refit . Oh well a little walk down memory lane for a stocking filler gone . But no.... Mr Bain offered to drop them at my home . He was as good as his word and for such a small sale ...wait more than that he wished me merry Christmas and wouldn’t take any money. I visited the lovely Bains Retro Candy Store while staying on the Grassmarket in Edinburgh. The store is delightful, with its rows of colorful candies of all kinds and gift ideas, homemade candies and sweets we never heard of. It was an adventure! Then, after returning to the states, I was thrilled to learn that Bains Retro Sweets ships worldwide, and I was able to order special Scottish sweets to give as Christmas gifts. The service is great and the proprietor, John, is willing to do whatever is needed to make your experience simple and expedient. I came here with my daughter on her 13th birthday to let her choose what she wanted, talk about a kid in a candy store! We were in the shop for ages! The owner was so kind and helpful and gave her a sweetie jar free of charge and sat and printed off special labels to put on it to commemorate her birthday. She had a great time choosing from the amazing choice of sweets. Will be back at Christmas!

Just arrived back home & already miss having bains retro sweets so close.. went there twice! the sherbert lemon is excellent, definitely the ones Dumbledore gets! :) and due to very attentive consulting & also got me twice some homemade tablet.. delicious!! this just made it on my list of shops which i will repeatedly visit once i‘m back in Edinburgh!!

I visited Bains Sweet shop in May 2019 and was amazed at the vast selection. My favorite was the creamy vanilla fudge; by far the best I’ve ever tried. Best of all, I took some home with me and after 5 months it was still as fresh as the day I bought it. Aside from the great sweets, the best part about this shop is the excellent customer service by John the shop owner. We have stayed in touch by phone and email and I’m planning on ordering about 10 kilos of sweets to my home in the USA.

We really enjoyed our visit in to the store. The variety was phenomenal. Bought my absolute favs, floral gums and some super sour candies for my daughter. The tablet is to die for. Will definitely go back when in Edinburgh next.
